Now a day’s vaccine is used to prevent rabies virus. If a person is bitten by a dog, it is not necessary to wait for symptoms to appeared and check whether the dog has rabies or not. The person is treated as rabies because it has no definitive test except the PCR of CSF. Treatment is simply clean the wound with soap and keep the wound open because rabies virus dead when it come in contact with air. According to some research UV light from sun also help in destroying the virus but it doesn’t have any evidence .

Milwaukee Protocol:

In 2004, a 15 years old girl named Jenna Giese from united state develops rabies. One day when she is coming back from church, she is bitten by a bat. The scratch was small so she ignored the scratch and went home, after a week she become anxious and show some other symptoms. She brought to hospital after three weeks doctor though of meningitis but the test report was negative. He was sent to children hospital Wisconsin in Wauwatosa. Dr. Willoughby took sample and sent this sample to Centers for Disease Control in Georgia. Reports confirmed she has rabies. Doctors said it is too late for vaccination and ask their parents to bring it to home so she may die easily. Dr. Willoughby was not willing to give her vaccination after his failure in 1970’s. He thought of an experiment, he stopped her brain activity a state of coma. Because in this condition heart is over stimulated by brain and eventually cause death. So he cut the connection and gave the body time to fight with virus. After 14 days, the girl wake up from coma and she is completely fine but she was like a newborn at the age of 15. She re-learned everything like walking, talking etc. She was first who alive after rabies without being vaccinated and was called as Medical Marvel. After this technique is also used not worldwide and is known as Milwaukee Protocol.
